About Us
We are a team of students dedicated to promoting disability inclusion in the workplace. At Seattle DBB, our project focuses on raising awareness about the systemic challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) in employment settings.
Our journey began by connecting with our local community and conducting research to better understand current perceptions and barriers. Using those insights, we launched an ongoing awareness campaign aimed at educating the public and advocating for more inclusive hiring practices. To drive this initiative, we’ve hosted informational stands, maintained active engagement on social media, and reached out to recruiters at large corporations to spark meaningful conversations about accessibility and bias in the workplace. These efforts have allowed us to engage with people of all ages and backgrounds, opening space for dialogue and reflection.
Our goal is not only to highlight the disparities that exist, but also to empower communities and businesses to take part in creating more equitable opportunities for PWDs. Through continued outreach and education, we’re working to build a future where inclusion is the norm—not the exception.
Process
Project Inspiration
After conducting research and actively observing the dynamics within the Seattle area, we identified a significant imbalance in job outreach—specifically, the inequalities faced by physically disabled residents. Approximately 10% of Seattle’s population lives with a physical disability, and the vast majority of this group remains unemployed.
These findings led us to ask difficult questions: Why are employment rates so low for this community? What barriers stand in the way? By exploring these issues, we were inspired to launch an awareness campaign to bring light to the employment disparities and promote more equitable opportunities across the region.
Inclusivity in the Workplace
A major focus of our project is encouraging businesses to build inclusive environments where people of all abilities can thrive. At Seattle DBB, we believe it’s our responsibility—as community members and future leaders—to push for workplaces that welcome and accommodate everyone, regardless of physical ability.
We are working directly with employers and the wider community to raise awareness, offer educational resources, and promote accessible hiring practices. By fostering supportive, adaptive work environments, we can unlock the potential of individuals with disabilities and help companies benefit from the diverse skills they bring.
What Is a Disability?
The United Nations defines a disability as arising from the interaction between individuals with impairments and attitudinal or environmental barriers that hinder their full and effective participation in society. This definition challenges us to shift our mindset—from focusing solely on individual limitations to recognizing the role that inaccessible systems and spaces play in exclusion.
Our project embraces this vision. By advocating for change in both attitudes and infrastructure, we hope to help create a Seattle where public spaces and workplaces are accessible, equitable, and empowering for all.
